Growth!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Oct 02, 2019 at 10:58:42 PM

Hello!

Another stretch goal falls to the power of backage over the weekend, and so the Collection grows again! Three newly converted 5e monsters swell the ranks! Well done you! And a very warm welcome to all our new backers!

I thought it’d be handy at this point to take a look at what our various stretch goals have unlocked. I’ll also update the campaign page to make this information easily accessible.

So!

We wanted to begin with a solid offering - not an artificially small pamphlet that had to be expanded to make it worthwhile. In short, we didn’t want to fund a disappointing book if it didn’t immediately go berserk. Hardcover, full colour, one monster a page, decent size - these things were our baseline.

So we started at 160 pages. That's a good size hardcover. For comparison, pulling a random 5e book off my shelf, if you have Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide that's 160 pages. The printer we favour uses a heavier paper stock for the pages as standard, so it'll be a bit thicker. Here's a side by side comparison of Sword Coast (at the bottom), and another hardcover printed by our printer (at the top):

We’ve unlocked 2 stretch goals for more monsters. Each of those initial ones added another 6 monsters.

We’re doing a monster per page: we prefer it when monsters don't spill across columns and pages, some beginning at the bottom of one page and finishing half way down the next. It makes it tough to find things.  And doing one monster per page allows us to do all the cool stuff for book navigation.

Most Creature Collection monsters fit on one page. Some need two, some need even more. This means that adding 6 monsters is going to add 8 pages in the book.

The latest stretch goal was a “mini” more-monsters, for 3 new monsters which adds 4 pages.

That’s 20 new pages of monsters added!

We also unlocked an Encounter Pack. That’s 4 pages featuring 2 locations, each with its own full page battle map. That’s another 4 pages.

The total growth to date is 24 pages.

The Creature Collection currently stands at 184 pages. Nice!

We also added VTT tokens to the digital pack. That’s quite a significant stretch goal. Every single monster covered in the Collection will get its own token in the Pack! That's a lot of tokens.

Unlocking the first Encounter Pack also added 2 poster sized versions of the battle maps to the Digital Pack. You can print these at home. Here’s an example of one of my previous maps that I home-printed this weekend, with the odd bit of scenery added and a few figures. It’s not Scarred Lands themed, but you get the idea.

We’ll add nice big VTT friendly versions of the map too, so you can effortlessly use the encounter packs, with the VTT tokens, on your virtual table top of choice. Nice.

TLDR:

Book: currently 184 pages

Digital pack:

  • VTT Tokens for all Creatures
  • 2 Battle maps with homeprint and VTT versions

Here’s some stuff we’d like to add to the book via stretch goals. What would you like to see?

  • CR index, so you can browse creatures by CR (only needs a couple of pages)
  • More monsters
  • More Encounter locations with lore, challenges and battlemaps in the book
  • More Encounter locations with lore challenges and battlemaps purely in the digital pack
  • Digital/home printable paper minis for all creatures
  • Battle maps of locations added to the digital pack (but not the creature collection itself)

Midway Update! New stretch goals!
over 4 years ago – Tue, Oct 01, 2019 at 02:22:47 PM

Hello!

Great to see so many of you good folks voting in the monster showdown! I thought KS was glitching when I’d looked away from my monitor, having just posted the poll, looked back and there were 30+ votes instantly! Great work! I daren’t guess at which group is in the lead for fear of jinxing it.

Anyway, I have some great news! I’ve been quietly crossing my fingers for a day or two, and we’ve passed a super secret milestone, and been given the green light to offer some new stretch goals!

Since we’re in the middle of the campaign, and we all want MORE MONSTERS I’ve been given permission by the ever-benevolent Rich at Onyx Path to slot in some extra mini stretch goals!

Rather than wait for those chunky $5000 lumps, we’re allowed to break them down into MINI MORE MONSTERS for a while! So there’s be 3 monsters unlocked for $2000 for a couple of slots. Nice! It means you get a little bit more for a little bit less, but we get them locked in that much faster. That's pretty exciting!

As well as more monsters we also want to add in a CR index to the book - this won’t take away any monster space, it’s a very useful addition, wherein you’ll be able to find all the monsters included, ordered by CR, all on a couple of pages. Keep your eyes peeled for that one!

Thanks again for all your support in bringing this beast to life!

MONSTER SHOWDOWN ROUND 2
over 4 years ago – Thu, Sep 26, 2019 at 08:53:18 AM

Welcome, monsterfans, to our second no-holds-barred monster show down!

As a reminder, we have already converted,  polished, illustrated and laid out 60 monsters from the glorious history of the Creature Collection 3e.  We also have a huge list of suggested creatures from Scarred Lands veterans, players, backers of the previous SL kickstarter, our writers and artists. And we’d like YOU to help us decide who makes the cut.    And so it is we have devised a series of pitched battles between groups of monsters, to see which is the most popular. Voting is open of course only to backers, so please use this privileged position wisely!

Here is the second line up:

Group Three: Bone Lord Slammers

  • Bone Lord
  • Burned Ones
  • Cave Shrike
  • Corpse Whisperer
  • Dreamwrack
  • Hiveskin
  • Keel Crusher
  • Lurker Below

Versus

Group Four: Moon Cat Grapplers

  • Moon Cat
  • Pain Doll
  • Quicksilver Stalker
  • Scar Twin
  • Seeker's Bane
  • Skein
  • Skullworm
  • Slaver's Pet

What we need you to do is VOTE by commenting “Group Three” or “Group Four” on this update.

We won't use one and two again, just to make sure we have no confusion with the last round.

Remember you're voting for the group, not individual monsters!

The group with the most votes will win, and thereby go through to be included in the Creature Collection 5e! Votes cast outside of comments on this post will not be counted!

But do not worry, gentle backer, should your favourite beastie be in the losing group -  The defeated creatures will return in a new team alongside others from the previous losing group, and each creature will get several chances to be included.

And hey. If we unlock a load of MORE MONSTER stretch goals, the we might need them all to appear! Who knows?!

Once again, voting will run until Monday 12pm GMT.  Seconds out, round two! DING DING
